Meribel Information & Webcams

What is Your Point of View?

Meribel is a big resort and pretty spread out. What it is exactly, depends on your point of view.

- To the multi-millionaires in those stunning chalets in their own enclave it is - exclusive.
- To the energetic young who live it up in he centre of town until 4 every morning it is - party town.
- To the groups and families who stay in personally catered chalets in charming mountain hamlets in the valley it is - heaven.
- To the ski until you drop, 4 valleys in a day keen crowd it is - the centre of the biggest playground in the world.

So, whatever your point of view, you can find what you are looking for in Meribel.

Chalets and Mountains

Originally 13 seperate mountain villages, Meribel was first conceived as a ski resort in the 1930s. From then until now, the principal of construction has been to complement the mountains, not spoil them. A local bylaw requires all building to be in timber and local stone resulting in a modern, efficient resort which truely reflects it's mountain surroundings.

The original traditional villages continue to flourish as ski accommodation. Ancient barns converted to beautiful chalets still fitting perfectly into the French mountain hamlet life.

On the Snow

Méribel is at the heart of the 3 Valleys, the biggest ski area in the world with 375 miles of groomed runs !

The 3 Valleys is described as the best intermediate skiing there is. Even if you have only been skiing one week, you will be crossing ridges to new valleys. If you have mastered Reds but are not yet on back country heli-skiing, this is the place for you. I have been here for 6 full seasons, never get bored and find new places to ski regularly.

Meribel is the heart of this enormous playground with the best access all round. For example, believe it or not you can get to the top slopes of the Courchevel valley quicker from Meribel than from Courchevel 1850 - it takes us one lift, it takes them 2!

The 3 Valleys has 600km of piste and 200 lifts. In Méribel we move pretty fast too, just look at the figures - firstly Meribel is the only single resort to offer 16 high capacity gondolalifts. And also: 18 chair-lifts (including an 8-seater and four 6-seater), 14 drag-lifts, 8 telebabies and 1 moving walkway.

Then coming downhill we have 150 km (94 miles) of groomed runs (9 black, 23 red, 34 blue and 8 green) including 2 Olympic runs.

And to keep it all perfect, Méribel has 650 snow canons (30 % of the skiing area) to reinforce its snow cover when necessary and 23 piste-bashers.

No wonder we love it here!

Apres-Ski and Night Life

The apres-ski revolves arround the live bands at La Ronde Point, Le Pub and La Taverne. Live music is a plenty in Meribel with several accomplished bands returning season after season. Happy hours usually start at 4pm then the band at 5pm. Of course you can always head straight back to the chalet for tea and delicious cake.

Things liven up again between 10 and 11pm when the bands, having rotated around the locations, re-appear for the evening. Meribel has one of the best social atmospheres in the alps - the place buzzes. The bars close at 1am when the real party begins at Dicks Tea Bar (or the more club-like Loft). Every genre of music plus live bands keep the room jumping until closing at 4am.

For a more rural evening out there are bars scattered up and down the resort plus La Tsarreta in Les Allues. A drink, a laugh and a more chilled bar atmosphere is available here.

A view of Saulire

A view of Saulire

The view of the Saulire summit ... a superb 2,739m above sea level, and various pistes (Mauduit, Sanglier, Niverolle, and Grande Roisere variations) running down into Meribel. The high altitude of this camera means that it can become obstructed by snow and cloud some of the time. If this is the case then please do check back later, as the view is superb.

The view looking across Meribel towards the Roc de Tougne. The two pistes in view above the chalet roofs on the left are the Stade (part of the 1992 Ladies' Downhill Olympic piste) and the Gelinotte which snakes down on the right. We find this shot the most useful to see what the road conditions are like up in resort and if they are clear. We are pretty certain the road in the view is not heated!!

The view from the very top of Tougnete bubble lift looking down upon the whole of Meribel. The piste in the foreground is the Combe Tougnete and the building in the middle is the Arpasson restaurant. On the far side of the valley on the right you can make out the Doron piste which runs into La Chaudanne. The high altitude of this camera means that it can become obstructed by snow and cloud some of the time. If this is the case then please do check back later, as the view is superb.

A superb view from Hotel Le Doron overlooking the square in the very centre of Meribel. To the right hand side is the Tourist Office and the main Post Office. Often in the late afternoons live bands or street entertainers can be seen in the square in front.

The view at La Chaudanne; the central lift station

This is the true hub of the pistes with Meribel just visible in the background. La Chaudanne provides access to all the major lifts, car parking, kindergarten, lift-pass offices and multiple ski school meeting points. The altitude is 1433m, just in case the snow looks a little thin at the end of the season - there is probably lots more snow higher up.
