About Serre Chevalier

Serre Chevalier is a unique resort in the heart of the Southern French Alps. If you have ever had the chance to ski or snowboard in Serre Chevalier you will be aware of the main villages that make up Serre Chevalier such as Monêtier les Bains, Villeneuve and Chantemerle. However Serre Chevalier is actually made up of 16 villages, all quite different which make up one of the largest ski resorts in Europe.

Serre Chevalier, Hautes Alpes, France

Situated in the mountainous region of France known as the Hautes Alpes, the beautiful Serre Chevalier valley, while world famous for its winter sports, is equally impressive as a holiday destination in summer and early autumn. Part of the area of outstanding natural beauty known as the Parc National des Ecrins, this lush, sun-filled valley flanked by majestic peaks offers everything that the outdoor enthusiast could dream of.

First of all there are the stunning panoramic views as the sun sweeps through the valley in the course of a day. The hazy early morning light gives way to intense golden sunshine and azure blue skies at noon and in the evenings we often see beautiful rose-pink reflections in the snow that remains on the highest peaks year round. The Serre Chevalier valley boasts a sunshine record of 300 days per year and rainfall is rare in the summer months. Even an easy walk up to Serre Ratier or the lower slopes of the Col du Granon affords magnificent views of the villages nestled along the winding Guisane river. Longer walks reveal beautiful mountain lakes and waterfalls. Throughout the changing seasons of the year Serre Chevalier is a haven for lovers of nature especially photographers and increasingly artists.

For the energetic alpine enthusiast there are a huge range of summer activities catering for the beginner, the intermediate and the more expert. Mountaineering, hiking, nature rambles, cycling ( the Tour de France passed through Serre Chevalier in July 2003) mountain biking, quad biking, canoeing and kayaking, pony trekking are extremely popular past times here, with specialised equipment hire shops and expert tuition where required. There is also the Aventure Parc: a woodland trail with twenty assault course style challenges and a bungee jump!

For a relaxing alternative, the charming village of Monêtier les Bains offers an outdoor swimming pool and its famous naturally heated spa baths. Further health and beauty treatments can be enjoyed at Espace Thalsso Forme in the neighbouring resort of Villeneuve.
